You can’t walk around inside Amboseli outside of Observation Hill (Normatior), but Tsavo West gives you proper chances to stretch your legs.

At Mzima Springs, fifty million gallons of fresh water filter up daily through Chyulu’s black volcanic rock. You walk shaded trails down to a sunken glass tank to watch hippos and crocs swim by. Over at Chaimu Volcanic Crater, you can trek right up jet-black cinder slopes.

You must hire an armed KWS ranger at the gate house for both hikes. It’s a welcome break after sitting in a Land Cruiser for hours.

Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary 16:00 HRS Cutoff Rule

Tsavo West holds the 90-square-kilometer fenced Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, built specifically to safeguard black rhinos.

The wardens enforce a strict entry cutoff at 16:00 HRS (4:00 PM) and lock the gates at 18:00 HRS (6:00 PM).

Complete Eight Day Circuit Schedule

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli by Road & Sunset Drive

We pull out of Nairobi at 6:00 AM in a private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser to beat the Mombasa Road truck traffic. You’ll pull into camp right at lunchtime. At 3:30 PM, we head out along Ol Okenya swamp to find elephant families feeding near yellow-fever tree groves (Acacia xanthophloeia).

Day 2: Full Day Amboseli Swamps & Mount Kilimanjaro

Engines start at 6:00 AM sharp. You have to beat the thermal clouds that hide Kibo peak by 9:30 AM. We track bull elephants in Enkongo Narok swamp along research routes monitored by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, then climb Observation Hill for a panoramic view over the marshes.

Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West via Shetani Lava Flow

Check out after breakfast and drive east along the dirt C103 backroad through Chyulu Gate. We cross the Shetani Lava Flow and arrive at your Tsavo West lodge for lunch. Afternoon game drive around Kilaguni heading toward Roaring Rocks.

Day 4: Mzima Springs & Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary

Morning walking safari at Mzima Springs escorted by an armed KWS ranger. Return to camp for lunch. At 3:00 PM, drive to Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, entering well before the strict 16:00 HRS cutoff to track black rhinos.

Day 5: Bush Flight Tsavo West to Masai Mara

After breakfast, we transfer you to Kilaguni (KMG) or Finch Hattons Airstrip for your direct bush flight to the Masai Mara ($600 USD per person included). Touch down on the Mara plains, meet your Mara-based 4×4 guide, check into camp, and head out on an afternoon drive.

Day 6 & 7: Full Days Masai Mara Game Viewing
